If you've considered exploring HoloLens development, there has never been a better time to get started. During the month of January, you can join other learners committed to taking the first step by signing up for the HoloLens 2 App Development Fundamentals Challenge. When you join, you'll be assigned to one of four teams in a competition to see who will have the most learners complete the required training by January 31st. The training includes a series of hands-on exercises that will show you the basics of HoloLens 2 app development including how to:

• Configure Unity and set up a project with the Mixed Reality Toolkit
• Add hand interactions to manipulate objects
• Use solvers to create intelligent object placements
• Add buttons, dynamic menus and descriptions to objects
• Enable eye-tracking and voice commands
• Anchor objects to the real world
• Add spatial audio to an application
• Use speech recognition and transcription
• Integrate to cloud services like custom vision and bot services
• And much more

Don't have a device? That's okay. While it is always the most fun to interact with your holographic apps via HoloLens, you'll be able to learn the basics and view your progress in Unity's editor or by deploying to the HoloLens 2 Emulator. We suspect it will take around 6 hours to complete all of the exercises once the tools are installed and ready. The modular design of the training makes it's easy to pause and resume again at any time, however, so you'll have the flexibility to go at your own pace as long as you finish by the end of the month to help your team with the win.

Rendering Performance guru Vivek Reddy earned his battle scars working as a Virtual Production Developer and Technical Director on The Lion King and Destiny and he is here to help you destroy jank and create XR apps that maintain smooth framerate performance.

Bio Julia Schwarz:

Julia is a Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft where she works on input and interaction techniques for Mixed Reality.

She is one of the key members that brought instinctual interactions to HoloLens 2, allowing users to directly interact with holograms using their hands. She took the new HoloLens 2 input model all the way from research prototype into a shipping product, first building numerous prototypes to demonstrate the value of touching Holograms, then as lead engineer to bring the prototypes into shipping code. Finally, she presented the new input model at the HoloLens 2 announcement at Mobile World Congress in 2019. She currently works on ensuring our customers can build high-quality instinctual interactions by working on UX frameworks like Mixed Reality Toolkit, providing guidance, and leading a team doing interaction prototyping for new experiences and devices.

With an introduction of hand tracking Oculus Quest became one of the most popular VR headsets in the market. Oculus Link feature enables VR developers and gamers use the external hardware resources to develop high quality applications.

In this free live workshop, Eric and Usman are going to introduce you to hand tracking capabilities of Oculus and other hand tracking-supported AR devices. Eric Carter will present the most important lessons he learned during his work as principal game designer at Oculus Studios and design engineer behind HoloLens 2 project.

Usman will then show you how to setup your Oculus Quest device for development and basic physics in Unity. Attendees will receive the project resources presented during the workshops.

During the workshop, we'll share:
- The current landscape of designing UI for hand tracking applications
- The big three paradigms of hand tracking design: direct manipulation, hand rays, and hand tracking
- Alternative options for hand tracking UI/UX
- How to setup your hand tracking device for development in Unity
- How to implement simple physics and interactions - finger recognition, pushing the button, etc...

At the end of the workshop, you'll have:
- An understanding of hand tracking design functionalities and best practices
